Schools that Accept FSEOG Funding

Students rely on various financial aid resources and programs in order to complete their college educations. While some students sign up for large amounts of borrowed monies and funds, others look to grants, fellowships, scholarships and aid as a means of meeting educational expenses.  While the FSEOG is effectively “free money for college“, there are a number of things you must do first.

These students must complete the required forms for federal funds. The primary application for many grants, and federal student loans is the “Free Application for Federal Student Aid” usually called the FAFSA. Within a FAFSA are all of the answers that schools and the government need in order to know just how much aid, loans or financial assistance a student will need to attend the school of their choice.

The FAFSA asks for some key figures, and one is the “Expected Family Contribution” or the EFC. This takes into consideration a student’s or their family’s income, assets, family size and may even include the number of students currently enrolled in a secondary education.

The EFC is a figure used by college financial aid offices to determine the exact amount of money the student will need in order to attend their college. Many financial aid offices are then able to direct the student, and their parents, to the appropriate agency, or to help the student get the funds from the school itself.

This situation is available to students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. The students will have all ready been awarded a federal Pell Grant, and if these funds still fall short, they can access a Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant or FSEOG.

Approximately four thousand colleges and universities are in receipt of the more than seven hundred million dollars of student aid funding through FSEOGs each year. Awards can vary from four hundred dollars and range up to four thousand dollars per year.

A school’s financial aid office is entrusted with the management of their FSEOG funds, filling in the financing gaps for the students who qualify. The monies are not a guarantee to a student, even if they do qualify, because the funds are limited to a certain amount and are only distributed until they run out.

Any other awards impact the amount awarded to a student seeking the FSEOG funds, and it is the financial aid office that makes the final judgment about the total amount of the grant.

A student interested in a particular school should contact their financial aid office to see if they provide FSEOG funds to students with financial need, and ask what the deadlines and status of their FSEOG program currently is.
